History of Kelowna Heritage Loft
This historic place we now call “Kelowna Heritage Loft” is part of the two-storey concrete-block Sutherland Store, built in 1907 in a simplified Victorian Italianate style, and located at 339 Bernard Avenue in Kelowna's downtown area. The building is significant for having been developed by Daniel Wilbur Sutherland, a major figure in social, economic, and political activities in early Kelowna. The building has value for having accommodated a wide range of commercial and cultural activities in the early years of our newly incorporated city, Kelowna. The Orange and Odd Fellows' Halls were located on the second floor in the building's early years, which we now refer to as the Kelowna Heritage Loft. Companies such as Mackenzie's General Store, Kelowna Furniture Company, Kelowna 5 cents to $1 Store, and then Picture Perfect and Perpetual Blooms later on occupied the ground floor spaces over the years.
